Buying A Vintage Guitar Through Ebay By Jeffrey Norris
If you're considering purchasing a vintage guitar there are usually some impressive instruments on eBay. Obviously, some of the more sought after guitars can demand a very high price, but I consider a real collector's piece a very good investment. I've heard different opinions on acquiring a vintage guitar through eBay, specifically because of the higher prices usually associated with them. I've done business on eBay for about ten years now and I have nothing but good things to say about eBay, and all of the sellers (and buyers) that I've had the pleasure of dealing with. I do realize there can be problems, but I also know that eBay is swift to mediate and solve any complaints. They especially look out for their many buyers. When buying a vintage guitar, amp or any other piece of equipment, the main thing is to do your homework before you decide to make a purchase. It doesn't matter if you're buying on eBay, another site or even face-to-face if you don't now the value of an instrument that you're considering. A publication like Gruhn's Guide to Vintage Guitars would be very helpful. It's available on Amazon and at most bookstores. I've seen guitars for well over ten thousand dollars being offered on eBay, and although I've never purchased one of that value, if I saw something I really wanted (and had the funds), I wouldn't hesitate to buy through eBay. One thing I
have found - communicate with the seller before you bid. Even if I don't have a specific question, I'll sometimes ask one just to see how long it takes the seller to respond and to see how he talks about his/her item. Also, I've found that if you ask the seller if there's anything wrong with his item, he'll be more apt to tell you since you've specifically asked. I believe it's easier just to leave it out of the auction description that to flat out lie about it when asked. So, if I sound like an eBay enthusiast, it's because I am. You may have a dealer or two in your town that handles vintage guitars, but you're going to be hard-pressed to find the numbers of instruments that you can on eBay. Also, if you call and ask a dealer if he can has, or can find you a 1962 Telecaster (example), I wouldn't be surprised at all if he just brings up the eBay site and does a quick search. eBay is as popular as it is for a reason. That reason isn't because people get ripped off regularly and don't like the site. With all the protection in place for the buyer, your main concern should be finding the right piece of equipment and knowing exactly the highest price that you're ready to pay before you bid. Having said that, know how you're protected before you bid on anything at eBay, or any other site for that matter. The ultimate responsibility is up to you. Caveat Emptor - Buyer Beware Although I sell many more items on eBay that I buy, I (obviously) absolutely love the selection of items available on the site. If you're considering a vintage guitar you should definitely have a look at eBay, the premiere online auction site. You just may find that certain instrument that you've been unable to locate anywhere else.
